Religious Education at St Mary’s Catholic First School

At St Mary’s Catholic First School we aim to fulfil the aims of the Religious Education Curriculum Directory, Religious Education (RE) which is primarily taught through the ‘Come and See’ programme of work. It is taught through the process of Explore, Reveal and Respond. We dedicate one week per term to the teaching of other world religions including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.

The aims of RE (as stated in the Religious Education Curriculum Directory) are:

  • To present engagingly a comprehensive content which is the basis of knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith;

  • To enable pupils continually to deepen their religious and theological understanding and be able to communicate this effectively;

  • To present an authentic vision of the Church’s moral and social teaching so that pupils can make a critique of the underlying trends in contemporary society;

  • To raise pupils’ awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them;

  • To develop the critical faculties of pupils so that they can relate their Catholic faith to daily life;

  • To stimulate pupils’ imagination and provoke a desire for personal meaning as revealed in the truth of the Catholic faith;

  • To enable pupils to relate to the knowledge gained through Religious Education to their understanding of other subjects in the curriculum;

  • To bring clarity to the relationship between faith and life, and between faith and culture.

Why is Religious Education important?

God's greatest commandment is at the centre of all that we do in our school life, family life and within the Parish.

Our lessons focus on the all aspects of Catholic life; from learning about the importance and power of prayer, to the teachings of Jesus and their interpretation in the modern world.

We aim for every child to leave us being the best they can be by living the Gospel Values daily and by following God's greatest commandment 'love thy neighbour as you love yourself' and to love God.

When is Religious Education taught?

At St Mary's Religious Education forms 10% of our weekly timetable. This equates to 2 hours for children in EYFS and KS1 and 2.5 hours for children in KS2. This does not include time dedicated to worship or prayer.

How is Religious Education taught?

At St Mary’s Catholic First School we use the Age-Related expectations to plan learning opportunities for our children. These are a description of what is expected of pupils by the time they reach the end of a phase. The phases are:

 4-5 years

5-7 years

7-9 years

Within the standards, there are three sections:

AT1: Knowledge and Understanding (learning about Religion)

AT2: Engagement and Response (learning from Religion)

AT3: Analysis and Evaluation

Place a high value on love,  laughter, kindness compassion,  forgiveness, truth and peace

Our St Mary's Branches of Love

Our Branches of Love is a weekly award for a child in each class. All the children vote for the pupil who has shown they are living the gospel values by showing kindness, integrity, courage, compassion, forgiveness, peace or justice. We celebrate these children in our Assembly & they receive a Branches of Love certificate.
