Oracy - Curriculum

 Plymouth Oracy Project

St Mary’s Catholic First school is taking part in a 2 year Plymouth Oracy Project in conjunction with Voice 21.

As a school, we recognise the importance of speaking and listening and already have many strategies in place to encourage our children to speak with purpose, clarity and confidence. This includes chatty chums, chotting (chatting and jotting) and the use of sentence starters in lessons such as maths.

As a staff we are aware of the four strands of oracy: Physical, Linguistic, Cognitive and Social and Emotional. However, this project will help children to further develop key skills in all of these areas.

Our aim is for every child to leave our school being able to speak with fluency and  consideration in a range of situations such as presentations, class discussions and debates.

Please see the slides in the document below for further information on the four different strands of oracy.
