October 2022

Week 31st October - 4th November 2022

What a busy and wet week we have had. Everyone has settled into Shire class really well and we have been busy with our learning.

This week we wrote several stanzas for our Fireworks poem and learnt all about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate on November 5th. We even decorated the role play area with chalk fireworks and The Houses of Parliament.

We have been talking about the past, present and future and linking it to ourselves as well as parts of History.

In maths we are learning about number bonds. We learnt that to bond something means to stick it together just like in maths when we add two numbers together.

Week 17th-20th October 2022

I can’t believe it is already half term. We have been so busy over the last 7 weeks and Mrs Maltby, Mrs Conway and I have really enjoyed getting to know all the lovely children in Year 1 Shire class.

This week our focus has been on RE and learning about how we all belong to various groups and how Jesus loves us all despite us all being different.

We were also lucky enough to meet an author, we joined in with Dorset Libraries online meeting on Wednesday and met the author of Handa’s Surprise - the children enjoyed learning all about the story and why the author wrote it.

Finally, we had a special bubble treat this afternoon to celebrate the end of term.

Week 10th-14th October 2022

This week we had a lovely day on Monday investigating part whole models and how we partition numbers.

We also learned about the five senses and in particular our sense of hearing - we took part in a quiz and discussed how easy or hard it was to decide what things were.

We investigated sounds that fireworks make by watching some of the Disney fireworks show and acted out our poem On Firework Night by Andrew Collet.

We also  became geographers this week and looked at our town of Dorchester via Google Earth. We discussed the difference between a town,  village and city.

Week 3rd-7th October 2022

This week we have been busy writing our Little Red Riding Hood stories and reading them out to our friends in class.

We have also been collecting leaves and discussing Autumn and the months of the year.

We have learnt about partitioning numbers in maths and used counters to help us partition numbers up to 10.
