Blog January 2022

Week 31st January-4th February 2022

Inspired by the trip to the County Museum, a few children made some artefacts at home. A couple of friends made spears in the woods; reenacting the  Stone Age.

In Science, the children have been designing their own investigations; testing the theory that sound travel weakens over distance. They will be conducting this on Tuesday.

We have had some wonderful writing over the last few weeks - with work based on Ted Hughes' book, The Iron Man. For the next three weeks, we are looking at newspaper text. Any talk at home about the way that reports are written would be most appreciated (pointing out headlines, eye witness accounts, emotive language etc.)

Thank you for your continued support with reading at home. It really makes a huge difference to your child. The children love their weekly “free time” in our class library. The atlases have proven to be very popular over the last few weeks.

Week 24th-28th January 2022

The children have loved testing their strength and balance on the apparatus this week in PE and have used knowledge learned on their trip to the Dorset Museum last week for their history lessons.

Week 17th-21st January 2022

Year 4 are loving their research on smugglers and smuggling; thank you to all parents who have assisted with this. We have had several smuggling pouches brought in from home and a skirt- all hand sewn by the children. This is a key skill we will be developing further this half term with everyone.

In history, we embedded their understand of smuggling through drama. Using different drama techniques, we imagined being a local villager along the Jurassic coastline and being encouraged to join in with the smuggling. They had to decide how they would respond and why.

In  writing (based on Ted Hughes' The Iron Man) children have been wonderfully selective with language use; alongside creative ideas for ensuring a “spooky” atmosphere.

In science, the children have been learning about sound and how we hear. They each had a platform to share their findings with the class. Emphasis was on engaging the audience and keeping their interest. This was superbly achieved with clear voices and sound knowledge.

On Friday we went to the county museum to initiate a music project that your children will be performing in, in the historic amphitheatre: Maumbury Rings. The children met composer Jeff Edge and were inspired by the artefacts seen. Their behaviour was excellent and they asked intelligent questions.

A great week year 4.

Week 10th-14th January 2022

The children had fun on Wednesday seeing what different sounds they can make with instruments.

Week 4th-7th January 2022

Happy New Year! The children have settled in well and have welcomed two new students into the class.

Wednesday morning they were surprised to find the outline of a large Iron Man in the playground; triggering predictions of how he arrived, what he wants and what will happen next. The Ted Hughes'  book of The Iron Man is the stimulus for our writing over the next few weeks.

In PE, the children have started a PE unit on gymnastics - led by our PE specialist.
They were learning to balance and work in pairings creatively.

In maths we are learning to multiply and divide - using written methods. Please see Google Classroom for the set home learning on this.

Thank you with your continued support listening to your child read and helping them to learn their weekly spellings.
